Absinthe is as illicit as it is intoxicating and amongst history's most notorious liqueurs. romanticised and maligned in equal measure. Sipped by OscarWilde, Baudelaire, Vincent Van Gogh, Monet,Picasso, Edgar Allen Poe, Aleister Crowly and many other prominent artists and writers.

Absinthe was first used in ancient Greece for its healing powers. It was believed to have stimulated creativity and to act as a curative and an aphrodisiac. Of course this is not as good as the old stuff they made in France and Van Gogh cut his ear off on maybe because it has not been distilled like they used to do but that's history and you can make the next best thing yourself. Absinthe in it's finished form has been illegal in most of the world since about 1912 but this kit will supply you with all of the neccessary herbs and my tried and true recipe with instructions to create the worlds most infamous drink that many archetypes from the past were notorious for using.

THE LEGAL STATUS OF ABSINTHE?The legality of Absinthe is based on several factors, including the constituent ingredients of the product, how it was made, and whether it is made for personal use or for sale. Wormwood is not approved by the FDA for human consumption, makes it illegal to sell for human consumption. You can sometimes buy wormwood in health food stores, because technically they're not selling it for human consumption. But if you produced absinthe which contained wormwood and marketed it as a beverage called "absinthe" you would be breaking the law. On the other hand, if you produce absinthe which doesn't containe wormwood, or which is purely for your own consumption, rather than for sale...then this may be legal.

SAZERAC Perhaps the oldest cocktail, it comes from New Orleans, circa 1850. In an old fashioned glass (chilled), pour a bit of absinthe (straight-but can do the sugar-flame thing) and swish it around so it coats the whole glass. Then add 3 shots of Peychaud's bitters (can order from their web site), 3 shots of Angostura, and an optional sugar cube. Muddle all these, and add 2 or oz. of bourbon, and a fair amont of ice. Stir well. Much like an old-fashioned, with a kick. Can also add a cherry.

NICKY FINN In a cocktail shaker, put 2 1/2 oz. brandy or cognac, 1/2 oz Cointreau. 1/2 oz. lemon juice, and a Tbsp. of absinthe. Shake furiously and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. THE

In a chilled cocktail glass, swish a small amount of absinthe, coating the glass. Then shake with ice: 2/12 oz. gin, 2 drops Angostura, 1/4 oz. Cointreau, and a dash of lemon juice (opt.) Strain into cocktail glass and ENJOY!

MORRESQUE (my favorite) 1 part Absinthe, 1 part (Orgeat) Almond Syrup, 2 parts water. Stir or shake and pour over ice, serve in the coolest glass you have.
